Middle School

Years 3 and 4
Ages 8 to 9 years

In Years 3 and 4 Mathematics, English and Science continue as core subjects. History, Geography, Religious Education, Art, Design and Technology, Music, French, Information and Communication Technology, Physical Education, Speech and Drama form the rest of the academic curriculum.

Mathematics concentrates on the four rules of number, their use and application in all areas of calculation and practical aspects of the subject. Strong emphasis is placed on learning tables and mental arithmetic. Pupils are also introduced to a variety of problem solving techniques which facilitate their learning of number processes.

The English syllabus is aimed at further developing reading skills, sentence construction, written comprehension and writing for a variety of purposes. The importance of oral fluency and ability to comprehend the spoken word are emphasised at all times. The School Debating Society meets twice termly, when children are given the opportunity of speaking in public before an audience.

Science studies concentrate on the observation, recording and analysis of living and non-living things which make up our environment.
