TRADITIONAL IDEAS - MODERN METHODS

Cathleen Cartland founded Ruckleigh School in 1909. She was a progressive educationalist with radical ideas for the time, choosing to teach boys and girls together within a nondenominational environment that welcomed and celebrated all mainstream religions.

This innovative approach proved to be a success, with local families quick to recognise the advantages of co-education and the opportunity for brothers and sisters to attend the same school.

The school has been located in its current building since 1940 – during which time it came into the ownership of the Carr-Smith family who continue to run it today. The school’s Bursar, Charlotte Laurens, is the granddaughter of the original owner.
